The announcement of the Government GN established Kakonko District—287 of 2011 after dividing the Kibondo District and creating the Kibondo and Kakonko Districts. In addition, the Kakonko District Council was established on 08/3/2013 and announced in the Government Gazette by GN.42.
The Headquarters of the District Council is located in the town of Kakonko located 48 Km North of Kibondo on the Kigoma – Mwanza highway.
Kakonko is one of the 8 councils in Kigoma Region. The district is located in the north of the Kigoma region and is bordered by Ngara and Biharamulo Districts (Kagera Region) to the North and West it is bordered by the Republic of Burundi, the South is bordered by Kibondo District, the East to North East is bordered by Bukombe District (Geita Region).
